Abstract
Background and Objectives : SSRI is widely used in the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobia, tinnitus, insomnia, and so on. The object of this study was to assess the efficacy of SSRI in the relief of tinnitus, sleep disorder and depressive tendency.

Subjects and Methods : We assessed the severity of tinnitus, the quality of sleep and the depressive tendency in 50 patients with tinnitus using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), the Pittsburg Quality Index (PSQI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Hearing impairment was evaluated by pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, tinnitogram. Totally 13 (M£ºF=1£º12) patients who had the BDI score over 16 in male and over 17 in female were prescribed with lexapro¢ç 10 mg once a day for 1 month without any other drug. After 1 month, THI, PSQI, BDI were reestimated and the statistically significant differences between pre-treatment and post-treatment were evaluated.

Results: In the pre-treatment state, the score and degree of THI score were significantly correlated with PSQI and BDI score, whether they had depressive tendency or not (p<0.05). This fact showed that discomfort of tinnitus, depression tendency and sleep disorder had very close relations. After the medication, tinnitus and depressive tendency were improved, which was statistically significant (p<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant improvement in the aspect of sleep disorder (p=0.96).

Conclusion: In the treatment of tinnitus in the depressed patients, SSRI is a powerful agent to treat both depressive tendency and tinnitus. However, in this situation, additional treatment is required to control sleep disorder.
